In the heart of Frankfurt’s historic district lies Römerberg Square, home to the city’s iconic Old Town Hall — a Gothic-style building complex that has stood as a symbol of civic pride for more than six centuries.

To capture the monument’s true form, the team utilized the FJD Trion P2 LiDAR Scanner, a compact yet powerful handheld device capable of generating centimeter-level 3D models in minutes. The goal was to digitally document the historic architecture with high fidelity for long-term 3D archiving and visualization.

On-Site Scanning: One Operator, Zero Tripods, 10 Minutes

The field scan was conducted directly on site at Römerberg Square, Frankfurt . With the P2’s ultra-light 700g body and standard RTK setup, a single operator could easily complete the full coverage within 10 minutes, requiring no tripod or external power supply.

Despite the monument’s vertical curvature and shaded areas, the P2 maintained stable performance thanks to its multi-SLAM fusion algorithm, which integrates LiDAR, vision, and RTK/PPK data to minimize drift — even in low-feature or partially occluded environments like curved stone bases or tree-lined plazas.

The three built-in cameras provided real-time RGB colorization, allowing the operator to check completeness and color balance during scanning. Through the FJD Trion Scan app , the real-time point cloud could be viewed directly on a tablet, ensuring full coverage before data export.

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) Visualization

Once the field data was collected, the dataset was processed in FJD Trion Model. Using the 3DGS rendering engine, the building’s materials, lighting, and surface details were reconstructed in photo-realistic quality. This advanced visualization enables immersive, interactive display — ideal for urban documentation, digital archiving, and architectural visualization.

Enhanced Detail through HyperDense+ Upsampling

In addition to realistic visualization, the data underwent HyperDense+ upsampling — a proprietary enhancement algorithm available in FJD Trion Model. This process increased the point cloud density up to 5–7 times, achieving 1mm spacing.

The result was a sharper and smoother dataset capable of capturing every micro-feature — from tiny inscription strokes to surface erosion marks. Such fine-grained data provides high-value input for urban planning, architectural analysis, and surface inspection.

FJD Trion P2: Easy Power and Perfect Data

The FJD Trion P2 scanner is great because it is both powerful and easy to carry. It's so light that one person can operate it smoothly around large objects, and the dual-battery system means you can work for hours without stopping to find an outlet. Even around tricky, curved statues and shaded corners, the P2 stays stable. Its smart Multi-SLAM Fusion technology keeps the scan line accurate, giving you perfectly clean data every time.

The Impact: Preserving History, Simply

The successful digital model of the Unity Monument now serves as a high-quality, permanent 3D record for architects and city planners. This project proves that the FJD Trion P2 can turn the difficult task of monument documentation into a fast, accurate, and visually stunning workflow. With smart scanning technology like the P2, high-quality documentation is made accessible to everyone, including architects, surveyors, and 3D designers.
